What Are the Types of Plastic Broom Wire?

Our common plastic brooms are composed of a broom head, a bristle board and the broom wire itself. The plastic melts, and the melted plastic is then fixed into a filamentous shape as it passes through the mold. But what exactly is "plastic broom wire", and which type should you choose?

What does plastic broom wire mean?

Plastic broom wire (also called broom filament or bristle monofilament) is the synthetic filament planted into brooms and brushes. It is extruded through precision dies, baked for straightness and elasticity, then cut to length. Plastic broom wire generally comes in two types: PET broom wire and PP broom wire.

1. PET broom wire

PET is a chemical material whose full name is polyethylene terephthalate. It has good mechanical properties — its impact strength is 3 to 5 times that of other films, and its folding resistance is excellent. PET broom wire has the following advantages:

• The heat distortion temperature and long-term use temperature are relatively high among thermoplastic general engineering plastics.
• Because of its high heat resistance, reinforced PET immersed in a solder bath at 250 °C for 10 s is hardly deformed or discolored — especially suitable for demanding applications.
• The bending strength reaches 200 MPa and the elastic modulus 4000 MPa; creep resistance and fatigue resistance are very good, the surface hardness is high, and the mechanical properties are similar to those of thermosetting plastics.
• The raw material cost of PET is relatively low among engineering plastics, giving it a high cost-performance ratio.

2. PP broom wire

PP is also a chemical material — the full name is polypropylene, a white waxy material. PP broom wire has the following characteristics:

• PP is a semi-crystalline material, non-toxic, odorless and tasteless; it is harder and has a higher melting point than the PE material used for plastic bags.
• PP products are light in weight, with good toughness and chemical resistance.
• Its rigidity and weather resistance are lower than PET, which is why high-end brooms often combine both or choose PET.
• Recycled PP material is called PP recycled material; processing is simple and the technology is mature, which keeps costs down.

Which one should you choose?

Choose PET broom wire when durability, elasticity and heat resistance matter most — outdoor brooms, industrial brushes and premium product lines. Choose PP broom wire when color variety and cost efficiency lead — household brooms for competitive retail markets.
